Ocean Literacy Program
The Purpose
Marine conservation efforts are our way of taking action to protect and restore our seas. However, this presupposes an understanding, love and appreciation for the ocean and its significance. Our Ocean Literacy Program is an initiative to connect people to the ocean and its wonders so as to increase ocean knowledge, create awareness for threats to the oceans and effectively convey the pressing need for immediate action to protect them.
Schools & Academia
Ocean literacy and climate awareness start from school, and their concepts best understood when we start discussing them early with the youth that will be involved in efforts towards ocean restoration and climate action in the near future.
MCP offers engaging, hands-on Ocean Literacy workshops designed to introduce fundamentals to young minds in a way that stays with them.
Ocean Awareness & Coral Conservation Workshop
The workshop aims to:
- Introduce students to the wonders of the ocean, coral reefs, and marine biodiversity.
- Raise awareness about the threats facing oceans (plastic pollution, overfishing, coral bleaching, climate change).
- Inspire responsible behavior towards marine ecosystems.
- Encourage curiosity about diving and ocean exploration as a way to connect with nature.
- Provide hands-on activities to help students understand how corals grow, the importance of reefs, and ways to protect them
Coastal Communities
Coastal communities are the most directly involved and impacted by the ocean, in terms of livelihood, food, weather and living conditions, erosion, tourism and more. Training and creating awareness within these communities is a direct way to improve the conditions of the coastal seas and ecosystems.
MCP’s Ocean Literacy initiative therefore conducts community-focused ocean awareness session specially designed to educate fishermen on sustainable fishing practices, the impact of plastic waste, IUU fishing, ghost nets, and the importance of coral reefs. These sessions are tailored to each community, using engaging, understandable, and relatable content in spoken Urdu.
